Mr. Trump was given a jersey and bicycle when attending the G7 conference

During the session on the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the G7 summit in France on June 16, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz gave US President Donald Trump a jersey of the German football team. This is a specially designed shirt with the words “Trump 47”, referring to Mr. Trump being the 47th US President.

President Trump received the gift and held it up for reporters to take photos, then folded it and placed it on the table.

“Happy belated 80th birthday, President of the United States. After all, we are all on the same team,” Mr. Merz commented when posting a photo of giving a shirt to Mr. Trump on social networks.

This is not the first time Prime Minister Merz has given gifts to score diplomatic points with President Trump. Last year, the German Chancellor gave the US leader a golf club and a gold-framed copy of the birth certificate of Mr. Trump’s grandfather, who was born and raised in Germany before immigrating to the United States.

The latest gift was given after the two leaders had words with each other earlier this year. The German chancellor declared that the US was “humiliated” by Iran and criticized Washington for launching a war in the Middle East without any strategy.

President Trump then responded that the German leader “should spend more time ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict”, as well as “fixing his problem country, especially on immigration and energy”.

French President Emmanuel Macron also gave bicycles to his counterpart Trump and other G7 leaders.

“All seven heads of state will receive a custom-designed bicycle,” said David Lappartient, President of the International Cycling Union (UCI).

These gifts are meant to promote the World Cycling Championships that will be held next year in the part of the French Alps. Photos posted by Mr. Lappartient on social networks show white bicycles, each with the flag of a G7 country painted under the handlebars.

Mr. Trump does not have a habit of cycling and once joked that besides regularly playing golf, he rarely exercises.
