Billionaire fund for Iran is key to US agreement

According to the British agency, the amount would be allocated to private investments in Iran in areas such as energy, logistics, transport, industry and infrastructure. According to the information, it will be funded by private companies and investors from the United States, Gulf countries, Asia, South America and Africa. The agency states that the mechanism does not provide for government resources, state financial aid, war compensation or public donations. More than half of the amount of this fund, over US$150 billion (R$768 billion), would already be guaranteed by investment promises, according to Reuters.

According to a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations, the fund was created to facilitate the signing of the final agreement. The plan has not yet been officially announced and should only come into operation if the definitive pact is concluded. The signing of the agreement is scheduled to take place next Friday (19).

The fund emerged after Tehran initially requested US$400 billion (R$2.4 trillion) in compensation for damages caused by the war. Washington refused to pay this amount, and the alternative became a private mechanism to attract investment to Iran.

The fund should be called the Reconstruction and Development Fund. Despite the name, the source heard by Reuters stated that it will not be a state reconstruction program, but a private structure to finance projects in the country.

The proposal appears within the agreement announced over the weekend to end the war, lift the US naval blockade of Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
