Storm: 160 fire brigade operations due to thunderstorms in Berlin

The violent thunderstorm in Berlin at midday triggered around 160 additional fire brigade operations. No major accidents occurred, a spokesman for the fire department said. Nothing is initially known about any seriously injured people.

The reasons for the operations were mostly cellars full of water and overflowing sewage systems on streets. Trees and branches were also damaged by the gusts of wind, so there was a risk of them falling.

The fire department temporarily declared a weather emergency, in which operations are no longer processed chronologically but according to other criteria. The volunteer fire departments were also alerted.

In some places, stalls at summer festivals were damaged by gusts of wind. Some of the 300 stages for the Fête de la Musique concerts on today’s longest day of the year were also affected.

At Hansaplatz in Mitte, a person is said to have suffered an electric shock at an event because water got on power cables.
