Peru’s highest electoral body proclaims Keiko Fujimori president-elect

This Friday, the National Election Jury (JNE) of Peru proclaimed Keiko Fujimori as president-elect of the country, after surpassing candidate Roberto Sánchez in the second round of the elections on June 21, becoming the ninth head of state in just a decade.

“I proclaim that the candidate formula presented by the Fuerza Popular political organization is the winner of the election of president and vice presidents of the Republic in the general elections (of) 2026,” said the president of the JNE, Roberto Burneo, in an event held at the headquarters of the country’s highest electoral body.

“Consequently, I proclaim Mrs. Keiko Sofía Fujimori Iguchi as President of the Republic, Mr. Luis Fernando Galarreta Velarde as first vice president (…) and Mr. Miguel Ángel Torres Morales as second vice president (…) for the period 2026-2031,” Burneo added, after reading the results obtained by the Fuerza Popular and Together for Peru candidates.

Fujimori thus becomes head of state after competing on three other occasions – 2011, 2016 and 2021 – always coming in second place. In these elections, he has surpassed his rival by 49,641 votes, that is, a difference of just 0.27%.

The conservative leader has reacted to the proclamation, with a message on her social networks where she expressed her “deep gratitude” for the “trust” placed by her voters.

“A new stage begins. We assume it with responsibility, humility and a deep sense of duty. Every day of this transition process is an opportunity to listen, dialogue and arrive prepared at the beginning of the new government,” he stated in the same publication, where he has already shared the profiles of his presidency on social networks.

Roberto Sánchez, for his part, has not spoken out so far but it is worth remembering that this Thursday he requested precautionary measures before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) alleging changes to the rules in the “full” electoral process.

After the proclamation, the next step will be the delivery of credentials to the elected presidential formula. Burneo already announced earlier this week that the ceremony will take place on July 15 at noon at the National Theater. With this protocol act, the JNE will formally recognize the new authorities who will assume the Government of the country for the next five years.
