Zelenskiy is restructuring the government in Ukraine

The Ukrainian President Wolodimir Selenskij has announced a cabinet reshuffle. He justified this, among other things, with a change in foreign policy strategy in order to strengthen relationships with key partners. He wants to be Prime Minister Julia Svyrydenko as well as the heads of some law enforcement agencies, Zelensky announced on Sunday on the X platform. He thanks Svyrydenko for her work. Zelensky did not name a candidate to succeed Svyrydenko.

The government changes are necessary to “ensure the implementation of an updated political strategy,” Zelensky added, without giving further details. The 40-year-old has only been in office as Prime Minister since July 2025. Previously, she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine. As head of government, she replaced Denys Shmyhal, whom Zelensky had appointed before the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. She later gained greater notoriety during the weeks of negotiations over a raw materials agreement with the USA.

Oppositionist: Svyrydenko becomes ambassador to the USA

Zelensky wrote that he had offered Svyrydenko a new role in relations with an important partner. He expects Parliament to agree to the corresponding changes in the government. Opposition MP Yaroslav Zhelesniak said Svyrydenko is expected to take over as ambassador to the United States. According to Ukrainian law, the resignation of the prime minister requires the approval of parliament and entails the resignation of the entire government.

Swyrydenko confirmed her departure on Telegram shortly afterwards. It was an honor to lead the government during this difficult time, she wrote. Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for more than four years. She made it clear that she was prepared to continue to serve the country in another capacity.
