Baltic Sea: Polish jets intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft

Polish warplanes intercepted a Russian reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea in international waters on Tuesday. “This is the first Russian attempt in a long time to approach our maritime border to test our air defense,” the Polish defense minister said Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.

According to him, the incident occurred about 30 kilometers off the coast of the seaside resort of Ustka. Accordingly, two Polish fighter planes made contact with the Russian one Ilyushin Il-20M machine and asked them to leave the area. The reconnaissance plane then turned off to Russia.

The incident shows that Russia “constantly engages in hybrid warfare, conducts reconnaissance and behaves hostilely towards all countries of the North Atlantic Alliance,” the defense minister added. NATO member Poland has repeatedly accused Russia of “hybrid warfare” since it invaded Ukraine in 2022.
