A woman on the beach was struck by lightning! Hero savior in 24 hours: I jumped to help, I massaged the heart!

According to witnesses, the woman was wearing a parasol on the beach. When the lightning struck, no one could believe what happened.

– Žena was struck by lightning while she was wearing a parasol. She was resuscitated by a rescuer who happened to be nearby. The helicopter arrived quickly and the woman was transported to Rijeka. I thought it was almost impossible for lightning to strike someone. I was totally shocked when I heard that it happened. Thank God the rescuer was nearby and helped the victim as much as he could – said a witness who happened to be in the camp for 24 hours.

Dubravko had no time to think. When he heard what had happened, he ran towards the accident site.

– I was at our bar, we are on the beach. Suddenly, the man who works there ran up to me and said that the woman had been struck by lightning. I immediately ran to them. Soon the helicopter came and we received impulse breathing and they transferred her further to the hospital – he told us.

He added that, according to what he heard, the woman came to the beach with her husband.

– As far as they told me, the lady came with her husband, she was waiting for him while he was bathing. It is interesting that the lightning did not strike anywhere else but right at her. I don’t know what to say, this is not my first or last rescue. There are not many of us who do that, we help each other. Muž the victim was in great shock. Yes, it was a very stressful situation. Not for me, I have never revived someone who was struck by lightning, but I have revived many people. Physically, she had nothing special on her except that her chest was burned – said Mari.

KBC Rijeka confirmed that they admitted the injured woman to the United Emergency Hospital, where they processed her and she is in the Intensive Care Unit, where doctors are performing all the necessary procedures. How serious injuries are after a lightning strike, explains the head of the Unified Emergency Hospital of KBC Zagreb, Dr. Adis Keranovi, who warns that a lightning strike should not be equated with an ordinary electric shock.

– For us in the emergency room to medicine, the most dangerous are heart rhythm disorders. A lightning strike can disrupt the normal conduction of electrical impulses in the heart, cause serious arrhythmias that can lead to cardiac arrest, and thus to death. This is the most difficult and dangerous consequence – the same Keranov.

He adds that lightning can cause temporary or permanent damage to the electrical system and serious mechanical injuries due to the force of the impact.

– It can lead to fractures, but also the breakdown of muscle tissue, which can lead to kidney damage and disruption of their function – he said.

Speaking about first aid, he notes that the most important thing is to immediately check whether the person struck by lightning is conscious, breathing and has a pulse, and to call the Emergency Medical Service at number 194 without delay.

– If the person is unconscious but breathing, they should be placed in the lateral position. If he is not breathing and there are no signs of life, it is necessary to immediately start resuscitation, that is, external heart massage, until the arrival of the Emergency Services, which should be called first – concludes Keranovi.

Although lightning strikes are rare, Croatia remembers several cases. Among them are Zoran Jurkovi from Vukovar, who was struck by lightning while riding a bicycle in 2007 and exited no less than through his penis, and Sabahudin Šahovi from Vara, who also survived a lightning strike in 2017.
