Delays in flights to Europe following the fall of a radar in Greece

Significant delays were recorded today (Sunday) in flights from Israel to Europe and back, following a radar malfunction in Greek airspace. The malfunction is expected to affect almost every flight that is required to cross Greek airspace on its way to or from Israel. In a message given to passengers, it is stated that “heavy delays” are expected as a result of the malfunction.

In the meantime, the airlines began to prepare for changes in the existing flight routes to overcome the problem. The change in routes is intended to allow the continuation of aviation activity despite the restrictions created in the Greek airspace.

The estimates are that the transition to alternative routes will significantly extend the total number of flights scheduled to reach Israel. According to the data, a delay of about two hours is expected for each flight affected by the changes in the air routes.

A passenger waiting to take off from Kos to Israel documented the long wait on the plane: “We are all here waiting – we are not given explanations. People lose it.”
