“Spain has made a serious mistake with its amnesty policy towards illegal migratory flows, now becoming a powerful factor of attraction. To ensure that it does not become a danger for our country too, the British government must urgently confront its European counterparts, urging them to proceed with arrests and expulsions, as well as to prevent movement across Europe. Furthermore, Downing Street must support Italy’s request to suspend free movement in the Schengen area with Spain, in order to keep this wave of illegal immigration under control.” This was told to Adnkronos by Priti Patel, a leading British political figure: for years she was the face of the hard line on immigration in the United Kingdom, holding the role of Home Secretary and today positioning herself as Foreign Minister of the shadow government. During her tenure she stood out for being the architect of the controversial deportation plan to Rwanda, under the Conservative Party government led by then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and for introducing the Nationality and Borders Act, legislation aimed at toughening penalties for human traffickers and severely limiting access to the asylum system.
Faced with the unstoppable flow from Morocco towards the Spanish enclave, Patel does not mince words and frames the issue as a systemic failure. “The scenes of migrants entering Ceuta illegally are horrific and show once again the risks to Europe’s borders. Some will inevitably try to head towards the UK.” For the former minister, the root problem lies in a permissive and institutionally weak attitude on the part of continental governments. “It is essential that European countries take matters into their own hands by abandoning their reluctance to adopt strong deterrent measures, describing the phenomenon for what it is, that is, an illegal entry into a sovereign country through illegal routes and facilitated by vile criminal gangs.”
The recent choices of the Madrid government end up directly in his sights. “Spain has made a serious mistake with its amnesty policy, since it acts as a magnet and a pull factor. This mistake will not remain limited to the Iberian peninsula but will soon result in a new wave of illegal crossings of the Channel. It is a fact that, once in Europe, they will travel through the Schengen area to the French coast.”
In a context of such territorial permeability, Patel suggests immediate and drastic diplomatic action that should involve Andy Burnham’s new Labor government with its European counterpart, supporting the Italian request to suspend travel in the Schengen area with Spain. Patel’s approach also extends to source and transit countries such as Morocco, where he believes diplomacy must be accompanied by economic and legal pressure. Building on his experience in government, he recalls having introduced laws on visa sanctions against those countries that refuse to take back their citizens and asks that these measures be applied with absolute rigor today. On the internal political front, his recipe for protecting the country from the consequences of the Spanish crisis involves immediate reforms and breaks with the current structures.
“We must exit the European Convention on Human Rights and restore the agreement with Rwanda, or create a similar agreement, to transfer migrants to a safe third country. This would act as a deterrent. We must also reduce the pull factor by holding those who arrive in special facilities until they are expelled. We must adopt a more rigorous approach to protecting our borders. This also serves to save human lives, preventing people from relying on dangerous criminal organisations”, underlines Patel.
