The other 22 leaders, on the contrary, blame the migration policies of the Spanish Government in their text for having favored the crisis, maintaining that the recent ruling of the Supreme Court on direct returns and the extraordinary regularization of a “very high number” of migrants have been able to encourage new arrivals.

In the letter, they therefore demand a more forceful European response to “effectively deter and relentlessly combat illegal migration”, reinforce external borders and address “all policies that may serve as pull factors”, in addition to supporting Spain to “reestablish effective control” of the border limits.
