Trump settles accounts with Sanchez: “The Spanish government refuses to protect its sovereignty”

Pigot said that the claims according to which Washington doubts the continuation of Spain’s control of the cities were spread by “malicious elements who seek to divert attention from the shameful refusal of the Spanish government to protect its citizens from the invasion of immigrants into its territory in Ceuta.”

He also claimed that the Spanish government is solely responsible for the crisis in the enclave, where 72,000 immigrants entered last week without permission. “The invasion of tens of thousands of immigrants to Ceuta is a direct result of the Spanish government’s refusal to defend its sovereignty, secure its borders and protect its citizens,” he said.

EU countries have since changed their position and praised Madrid for its handling of the situation, but Pigot called on Spain on Thursday to “take all the necessary steps to keep illegal immigrants away and regain control of its borders”.

“Unrestricted mass migration to Ceuta endangers the Spanish people and threatens the security of Europe,” he said. “The State Department stands by the Spanish people and all Europeans in defending their sovereignty, and welcomes every effort to repel the invasion, keep illegal immigrants away from European territory and secure the continent’s borders.”
