Austria is in the running for the foreign Oscar with the historical film “Rose” with Sandra Hülser. The Association of the Film and Music Industry in Vienna announced the submission. The Austrian-German co-production has already attracted international praise because of Hülser’s extraordinary presence and Markus Schleinzer’s precise direction, the association said.

The German actress embodies the title character. She pretends to be a man in war-ravaged Germany in the 17th century because she sees this as the only chance for a free, self-determined existence.

For her acting performance, Hülser (48) won a Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlinale. The film by the Austrian Schleinzer was shown in competition there. The drama also won awards at other film festivals.

Lead actress with a lot of Oscar experience

With “Rose”, Austria is relying on Hülser, who is currently one of the most famous German actresses in Hollywood. She was in the running for an Oscar for best actress in 2024 for her leading role in the legal drama “Anatomy of a Case”.

“The Zone of Interest,” in which Hülser plays the wife of a concentration camp commander, won the foreign Oscar at the Academy Awards that same year. According to the industry website IMDB, the drama “The Astronaut – Project Hail Mary” with Ryan Gosling and Hülser is one of the ten biggest box office hits of this year in the USA.

The shortlist for the 2027 Academy Awards will be determined in mid-December, with nominations announced in January. The Oscar Gala takes place on March 14th.
