After the fire in the Omiš area, 42 patients were examined at the KBC Split, of which 14 were hospitalized, ten in intensive care units, and seven of them were in life-threatening condition and on ventilators, the Minister of Health Irena Hrsticacute reported on Friday.
A meeting of hospital representatives was held at KBC Split, which was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi, Minister of Health Irena Hrsti, Minister of Tourism and Sports Tonči Glavina, Split mayor Tomislav Šuta and Split-Dalmatia mayor Blaženko Boban.
Hrstić said that after the fire, they visited KBC Split in order to familiarize themselves with the condition of hospitalized patients and the work of the employees who participated in their care, from the initial triage outside the hospital and the United Emergency Hospital to further triage and hospitalization.
Of the 14 hospitalized patients, ten were in intensive care units, and seven were in life-threatening condition and on ventilators. After stabilization, four patients were transferred to Zagreb – three adults to KBC Sestre milosrdnice, and one minor to the Clinic for Children’s Diseases Zagreb in Klaićeva Street.
“It was logical to move the patients to Zagreb after the initial stabilization in order to free up part of the intensive care capacity at KBC Split for the care of existing and new patients, especially during the tourist season,” said Hrsti.
She emphasized that as the Minister of Health, the most important thing for her is that all hospitalized and examined patients fully recover, and she thanked the employees of KBC Split and the outpatient emergency medical service for the quick organization and care provided.
Road transport of patients to Zagreb is the most appropriate
When asked about transporting patients to Zagreb, Hrstić said that after their complete stabilization, the doctors assessed that road transport was the most appropriate.
“It is estimated that it will be safer by road because, if a specific intervention is needed, it can be done more easily in an ambulance than in a helicopter,” she said.
All four patients, she added, according to the information at her disposal, were near Zagreb at the time of her statement.
Deputy Director of KBC Split Mirela Pavičić Ivelja thanked the hospital staff who responded to the call and “did a lion’s job” in a crisis situation.
“Some of them came from home, from vacations. Nothing is difficult when you have to do the work, especially in crisis situations. I hope we will have good results,” said Pavičić Ivelja.
She confirmed the data on the number of patients, noting that 42 were examined and 14 were hospitalized, ten of whom are in intensive care units. Seven of them are the most serious, and four were moved to Zagreb after stabilization – three adults and one minor.
