Dispute with Canada: Trump orders Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America”

In the ongoing tariff dispute with Canada, US President Donald Trump has renamed the border lake Lake Ontario “Lake America”. The 80-year-old signed a corresponding order in the Oval Office in front of the cameras, which should come into force immediately.

The US government emphasized that most of the lake’s volume lies in the United States, as do the deepest places. The name is intended to express that it is an American lake. Trump’s order reportedly instructs the official US database of geographical locations and names to change the name.

Days ago, Trump brought up the renaming and linked it to an economic aspect: “The United States is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” because we no longer expect to do significant business with Ontario,” he wrote on the Truth Social platform. Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and is closely linked economically to the USA.

Since the collapse of trade talks between Washington and Ottawa at the end of last week, the dispute between the neighboring countries has worsened significantly.

Lake Ontario is one of the so-called five Great Lakes, three of which border both the USA and Canada.
