The IAEA warns that the Zaporizhia plant has diesel fuel only for ten days

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, only has enough diesel fuel for about ten days of supply to the generators that guarantee the cooling and safety of the nuclear facilities.

“Diesel fuel is of fundamental importance when a nuclear power plant loses external supply (…). Without external supply or more shipments of diesel, the plant could suffer a total blackout in about ten days,” explained the director general of the IAEA, the Argentine Rafael Grossi.

For this reason, the IAEA has announced efforts to establish a new ceasefire zone, the seventh, to facilitate the repair of the Ferosplavna 1 power line.

The UN nuclear agency has also reported detonations and explosions in the vicinity of the plant and the neighboring town of Energodar, where most of the nuclear plant workers reside.

The Russian authorities, which control the plant, have on several occasions accused the Ukrainian Army of launching attacks against the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and its surroundings and have warned of the risk of a nuclear accident, although kyiv blames Moscow for this type of incident.
