Poland: Russian drone fished out of the Baltic Sea carried explosive device

One Russian drone who the Polish army not far from the Baltic Sea coast has recovered, was with Explosives equipped. “It contained a fragmentation warhead including a detonator,” a spokesman for the investigating public prosecutor’s office in Poznan told the news agency on Wednesday PAP. Army special forces managed to separate the warhead from the aircraft and defuse it on the beach.

The drone will now be further examined on a military site. According to the public prosecutor’s office, it is an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Gerbera-2 type, produced in Russia. The combat drone was found on Monday near the seaside resort of Rusinowo in Western Pomerania.

Drone with explosive device also over Lithuania

Poland is now also investigating a connection with a drone incident in neighboring Lithuania. On Tuesday night, a Russian combat drone entered Lithuanian airspace and was shot down. According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, this drone was also equipped with an explosive charge.

Poland and Lithuania want to investigate incidents together

Poland’s Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the drone found off Poland’s Baltic Sea coast may also have flown over Lithuania. After attempts to render it harmless, the drone crossed the Lithuanian border to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and then most likely operated over the Baltic Sea. Both countries are in the process of clarifying the incidents together.

The EU and NATO country Poland is an important political and military ally of Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia. At the same time, it sees itself as threatened by Moscow. It was only on Sunday that a Russian drone attack on a train from Kiev to Warsaw shortly before the border with Poland alerted the Polish government.
