Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation: 60,000 corrupt officials have been convicted in Russia over five years

Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Alexander Gutsan said that over the past five years in Russia, more than 60,000 officials have been convicted in cases related to corruption, and the value of the seized property of the accused exceeded 800 billion rubles – $9.5 billion.

He noted that increasingly, corruption investigations involve virtual money, the withdrawal of which is a more complex procedure. However, the official noted, legislation passed in February 2026 closes existing loopholes by extending the law to digital wallets.

The Prosecutor General called the seizure of funds from the heirs of corrupt officials legal: “The Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation has clarified in several decisions that guarantees for the protection of property rights do not apply to objects acquired by criminal means.”

“Moreover, regardless of the period of their ownership or transfer to third parties. Even after the death of a corrupt official, they are subject to confiscation from his heirs and transfer to the state,” added the Russian lawyer.
