Explosion in Split: The injured man’s life is in danger

In a gas explosion on Saturday after noon in a catering facility in the center of Split, two people, a woman and a man, were seriously injured, who received life-threatening injuries, the head of the on-call surgical service at the Split KBC, Dr. Dario Matić, reported in the afternoon.

The report about the explosion was received at 12:10 p.m., the police and firefighters immediately went to the field, and two injured people were transported to the Split hospital.

“A 62-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were admitted. Both were found to have serious physical injuries due to serious burns, primarily to the head, neck, face and upper respiratory tract,” Dr. Matić told reporters.

The man has serious burns on his upper extremities, part of his lower limbs and trunk, totaling some 35 percent of his body surface, while the woman’s injuries are somewhat milder, but the same is true of severe burns on her head, face and neck, he added.

“Both were primarily treated surgically at the Plastic Surgery Clinic in Križine, and after the operation they were intubated and placed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Anesthesiology Department. For now, they are stable,” said Dr. Matić.

When asked if the man’s life was in danger, he answered in the affirmative.

“We hope that he will be fine, but it is too early to say anything, especially in a man. The question is how severe the injuries of the upper respiratory tract are, that is what endangers them the most,” stressed the head of the on-call surgical service at the Split KBC, Dr. Dario Matić.
