Disaster in Gaza: 21 people, including 7 children, died in a fire in a residential building

Disaster in Gaza: 21 people, including seven children, died this evening (Thursday) in a fire that broke out in a residential building in the Jabaliya refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip. Palestinian sources said that “21 bodies were evacuated to the hospital, the number is expected to increase.” Local officials stated that the fire broke out during a family celebration that took place on one of the upper floors of the building.”

The Civil Defense team in Gaza announced that “we managed to deal with the incident and put out the fire, the search operations have ended, and the investigation teams are still investigating the causes of the fire, when the final number of victims may increase.” The spokesman for the Interior Ministry in Gaza, Iyad al-Buzum, said in Hasra that “large forces of civil defense and police are handling the fire in the residential building, the cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown.”

Also, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that “the fire consumed large parts of the residential building and caused a large number of deaths and injuries. The Civil Defense is trying to put out the fire.” Abu Mazen’s spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudaina, said that Abu Mazen announced that tomorrow will be a day of national mourning, during which Palestinian Authority flags will be lowered to half-mast in official institutions. Abu Mazen also wished a speedy recovery to the injured and said that “this is a national catastrophe”, and directed all authorities to provide all capabilities to help the families of the victims.
