Nieuwe tegenslag voor Britse premier Johnson: twee naaste medewerkers stappen op

Another setback for Boris Johnson, whose position is already wavering due to illegal corona parties. Two close associates of the British Prime Minister resigned on Thursday. These are policy chief and top political adviser Munira Mirza and communications director Jack Doyle. British media reported this on Thursday.

According to British magazine The Spectator, Johnson’s statements about the Social Democratic opposition leader Keir Starmer were the last straw for Mirza. In a debate in parliament, the prime minister had accused his rival Starmer of letting the notorious BBC presenter and sex criminal Jimmy Savile walk away in his position at the judiciary.

Johnson immediately garnered strong criticism with his swipe, also from his own circle. His behavior has been compared to that of former US President Donald Trump. It has long been clear that as chief of prosecutors, Starmer was not involved in the decision not to prosecute Savile, who died in 2011.

Mirza, an ally of the prime minister for years, unsuccessfully demanded an apology for Johnson’s attack and so she resigned. “I am convinced it was wrong to suggest this week that Starmer was personally responsible for Saville’s escape from justice,” Mirza wrote in her resignation letter.

Later in the day, Jack Doyle, communications director and closest adviser, also announced his resignation. He also points to the partygate scandal as the reason.

10 Downing Street has confirmed the news of the two layoffs, the BBC said.
