Ukrainian Eurovision winner found refuge in Turkey

Singer and composer Jamala, who won first place in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “1944”, has received asylum in Turkey. Hurriyet writes about this.

Speaking at a conference in Istanbul, she told how she had to escape with two children from the bombs that fell on Kyiv. After many hours of travel, they arrived in Ternopil, but even there they were under bombardment.

The singer, a Crimean Tatar by nationality, said that her husband remained in Ukraine as a conscript. She expressed gratitude to Turkey, its people and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for providing such assistance to Ukrainians.

The song “1944” is dedicated to the deportation of the local Tatar population from Crimea on the orders of Joseph Stalin. It also condemned the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.
