Reports: North Korea resumes construction at its nuclear test site

North Korea recently resumed construction activities at an underground nuclear test site north of the capital, Pyongyang, indicating that it may be ready to conduct a nuclear test soon, a news report said last Thursday, citing unidentified US officials. Southern.

CNN reported that North Korea recently resumed tunneling and construction activities at its underground nuclear test site, according to five US officials.

The report comes after South Korean government sources said the North may be working on a shortcut to one of the underground tunnels at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, which Pyongyang claims it dismantled in 2018 in an internationally monitored event to show its willingness to denuclearize.

One of the sources said North Korea has abruptly halted initial construction work to re-enter an underground tunnel in Punggye-ri, and is now digging the side of the tunnel, apparently to create a shortcut to the tunnel.

The source added that the establishment of such a shortcut may allow the completion of the restoration work “within a month.”
