European elections, Schlein confirms the unitary line and prepares the candidacy

The campaign for the European elections is ready and the lists will soon be too. The line to follow, as explained by secretary Schlein to the dem executive this morning, is the unitary one seen on the field in the regional elections. A line that ignores ‘who voted for whom’ at the congress. The piece that completes the puzzle is that of the candidacy of secretary Elly Schlein. The Dem general staff has been asking for it for some time: there is the belief that the presence of the Dem leader on the field could drive the Democratic Party’s consensus in the elections for the renewal of the European Parliament. But there is also a strongly felt need to provide security to candidates who have been on the starting blocks for some time. Because it’s one thing to start from the top of the list, or at least in ‘pole’, it’s another to start from the bottom, from the third or fourth row. Only when they know their positioning will a candidate be able to calibrate their campaign, from the point of view of the appointments to be held in the area and from an economic point of view.

“All the members of the Democratic Party secretariat have asked Elly Schlein to run in the next European elections”, reported Democratic sources at the end of the meeting at the Nazarene. The formulas proposed were different, it is underlined. The leader has taken note of this and will think about it. In any case, before expressing yourself, you will wait until the general system of lists is closed. The names in the field have been known for some time: the exponents of Energia Popolare-Base Riformista Emanuele Fiano, Giorgio Gori, Pierfrancesco Maran will in all likelihood be deployed in the North West where Cecilia Strada should also be deployed in the ‘civil society’ quota. Exponents of the strict Schlenian rite such as Annalisa Corrado and Alessandro Zan could run in the North East constituency, as could Stefano Bonaccini and Alessandra Moretti. The Center constituency is the most crowded with Nicola Zingaretti, Dario Nardella, Matteo Ricci, Alessia Moran and the very faithful secretary Camilla Laureti.

Among the external personalities, the former director of Avvenire, Marco Tarquinio, could run as leader. Another former director, Lucia Annunziata, is listed as the leader in the South, despite rumors that she is doubtful about this possibility. Antonio Decaro, Sandro Ruotolo and, perhaps, Lampedusa’s doctor and outgoing MEP, Pietro Bartolo, should also run in the South, less and less convinced of running in the Islands constituency. Before naming names, however, the PD secretary wants to take stock of the themes and objectives. The Democratic Party, as explained by Nazarene sources, “wants to confirm the growth of this last year” and everything necessary to achieve this objective will be put in place, starting with the “short” closure of the lists. The deadline remains April 15, 45 days before the vote. But the secretary does not seem willing to wait until the last moment to leave room for the issues, shelving the debate on the names. And topics were discussed a lot during today’s secretariat meeting, from “health care on its knees” to the “inadequate ruling class”, passing through the “Santanchè case” which for the dems “cries out for revenge” and in the face of which the ” minister’s resignation inevitable”.

In addition to opposing the government’s action, in fact, “the Democratic Party as the first center-left party has the precise responsibility of building the alternative”, they observe from the Democratic Party headquarters. The priority, at the moment, remains the relaunch of the popular initiative law on the minimum wage: “It seems an enormity to us” that the government wanted to bury the law, “even compared to the data on poverty. We will not give up an inch even with the other oppositions”, assure the Democrats. Together with this, the Democratic Party places at the center of its political action what it considers an “attack on freedom of information in a context that sees Rai militarily occupied by the right and Mediaset which, of course, is not in line with the center left” . Added to this is what the Dems call “the Hungarian government’s move on Agi”. All this, it is added, “requires us to forge an alliance between the sensitivities of this party. There is only one opponent and that is the right”, it is further underlined, “and the move to the right by Salvini and Meloni is bad for the ‘Europe”.
