Ukraine's Agriculture Minister resigns amid misappropriation accusation

The Minister of Agriculture of Ukraine, Mikola Solski, presented his resignation this Thursday, as reported by the president of the Verkhovna Rada – Parliament – of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, days after the accusation for alleged misappropriation of land owned state worth 5 million euros.

“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has received a declaration of resignation from Mikola Solski as Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine,” said Stefanchuk, showing the letter through his social networks and that a decision will be made on the matter during the “next” sessions of Parliament.

Subsequently, Solski used the official networks of the Ministry of Agriculture to confirm that he had sent his resignation letter to Parliament and that it was the “correct step” taking into account the situation.

“If Parliament decides to accept my resignation, I will be grateful for that decision, if it decides that I have to continue working, I will continue working,” he said.

This Tuesday, Anti-Corruption accused the Minister of Agriculture of an alleged crime of misappropriation of almost 2,500 hectares of state-owned land worth 190 million hryvnias (about 5 million euros).

These almost 1,250 plots located in the province of Sumi, northern Ukraine, were transferred to new owners between 2017 and 2021, when the minister was practicing as a lawyer in a company that then received the land for use.

The day before, the Anti-Corruption Office requested preventive detention on bail of 200 million hryvnias (4.7 million euros) for a Solski who has at all times stressed his innocence and that these events took place seven years ago and were nothing more than a “dispute” between state companies and individuals.
