Dutch Defense Minister to visit Finland on Tuesday – country has not stated its position on Finland’s NATO membership – Abroad

Defense ministers will discuss bilateral and multilateral defense cooperation.

Dutch Minister of Defense Kajsa Ollongren will visit Helsinki tomorrow, Tuesday 12 April 2022. The visit was hosted by the Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen(middle).

During the visit, the ministers will discuss, among other things, the effects of the Russian attack on the security situation in Europe and bilateral and multilateral defense co-operation, the Ministry of Defense says in a press release.

Netherlands has not yet stated whether it intends to support Finland’s NATO membership if Finland applies for it. Finland will probably decide on this during the spring.

Should Finland decide to apply for membership, all 30 NATO member states would have to separately admit Finland to join the Defense League.

Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte has previously told HS that Finland should give an answer as to what it intends to do.

According to data compiled by HS 14 NATO countries have already expressed their public support for Finland’s possible application.
