“No one can erase us”: thousands in the Budapest March of Life
About 5,000 marchers, 80 of them Holocaust survivors from Hungary, gathered near the synagogue in Budapest for the start of the March of Life to mark the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust of Hungarian Jews. The parade, which started and is being held under heavy security by the Hungarian police, passed through the streets of Budapest and arrived at the Kelty train station, from where the trains with the hundreds of thousands of Jews left for the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. About 565 thousand out of about 800 thousand Hungarian Jews were murdered at the end of World War II in the extermination camps, mainly in Auschwitz-Birkenau, on the death march at the end of the war and on the banks of the Danube, where they were shot as Jews.

Among the leaders of the March of Life in Budapest are the Chairman of the Jewish Agency Major General Doron Almog, KKL Chairman Yifat Ovadia-Losky, Israel’s Ambassador to Hungary Jacob Handsman, Jewish organizations and hundreds of Holocaust survivors alongside their children and sometimes their grandchildren.

Marian Miller, the mother of the comedian Adir Miller who survived the holocaust in Budapest, came to the March of Life together with her four children and three grandchildren. She, like old Holocaust survivors, will participate in the parade riding a scooter.

Adir Miller He said: “I am very excited, this is our victory march. To see the Israeli flags in front of the synagogue in Budapest, to hear the song ‘Aam Yisrael Chai’ – this is a feeling of strength, victory and understanding that no one can erase us.”

KKL chairman Yifat Ovadia-Losky She noted that “it is very symbolic that the March of Life takes place near the house where the State President Binyamin Ze’ev Herzl was born”, and emphasized the importance of the parade to commemorate the Holocaust and against the background of October 7.

Aviva Kenan who was a one-year-old baby during the Holocaust in the Budapest ghetto and her father was murdered, came with her son Yuval and daughter Anati, and said: “The excitement is enormous, this is my victory march, that the Nazis did not succeed.”

The march is led by the Zionist Youth Nest in Hungary. The head of the branch Daniel Ava-Laslau said: “There is great excitement, we are active and will lead the parade.”

Shimon Itzhaki (Shitz) a son of Holocaust survivors from Transylvania, said: “When I was in senior management positions at Elbit Damiya, we established 17 shopping malls in Hungary and 45 in Eastern Europe. The largest and last shopping mall we built is located in front of the Kelty train station, from where the Jews were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Before the parade, a moving ceremony took place at the Shoe Monument on the bank of the Danube, where 60 pairs of shoes are placed as a testimony to the mass murders of Jews who were thrown into the river and only a few of them survived.
