La Jornada: Appetite of international investors to bring resources to Mexico: BMV

Although the economic performance has been weak and there are fears about legal certainty, Mexico has benefited from the appetite of international investors who are looking for, in addition to developed markets, destinations where they can generate returns, said Jorge Alegría Formoso, general director of the Mexican Stock Exchange Group (BMV).

In interview with The Daybefore the start of the 15th edition of the Broadcasters Forum this Thursday, Alegría Formoso assured that the appetite of international investors is based on the stability of the financial results of the companies listed in Mexico, that their multiples and dividends are attractive and that there are sectors, such as the industrial sector, that have benefited from the rise in commodities.

“The financial reports have been relatively positive. Many of the stations that we see on the stock market have a global portfolio, they grew in Latin America, Mexico and the United States. Food and beverages have been one of the sectors that have had very good days; other weeks Cementos Mexicanos and mining companies have rebounded, which respond more to a geopolitical issue. This whole mix has been, in general, positive for the Mexican market.

“Despite the weak growth reported for the first quarter of 2026, the valuation of Mexican companies is attractive. That is, they still have an attractive price level; compared to low growth, they remain attractive for global investors. In addition, interest rates in the country continue to be (2.75 percentage points) above that of the United States. Therefore, the risk-return relationship remains attractive for Mexico,” guaranteed the BMV director.

The balance of non-residents in Mexican variable income securities was 195,339 million dollars in April, 1.7 percent more monthly and 28.3 percent annually. For its part, the net flow was positive at 375.1 million dollars in April and so far in 2026, a total flow of one billion dollars has accumulated, being the highest figure for the first four months since 2023, according to data from the Bank of Mexico.

Plans and services

The reduction in the number of issuers in the Mexican stock market makes it urgent to find new alternatives to make financing more affordable via initial public offerings of shares.

The general director of the BMV Group commented that with the arrival of the simplified offering regime there has been interest and there are already seven issues on the horizon, two of them in shares, but what has not closed the circle is on the side of potential buyers, such as Afores, funds or private capital offices.

He announced that work is being done to create vehicles that allow these investors to participate in placements that are typically small. It has been discussed that perhaps it will not be one by one (offer) of 100 million or 500 million pesos, but that they invest in a vehicle in which that group of companies are present.

The BMV, which 15 years ago was very dynamic in the creation of new products, such as Fibra (real estate investment trusts), CKD (development capital certificates), Fibra E (in energy and infrastructure), is now embarking on the creation of new services.
