Fujimori leads Sánchez by only 6,200 votes with 93.65% counted

The candidate of the far-right Fuerza Popular party, Keiko Fujimori, leads her rival, the candidate of Together for Peru (left), Roberto Sánchez, by only 6,228 votes, in the count of the second round of the Peruvian presidential elections held this Sunday when 93.67% of the minutes have been scrutinized.

Fujimori has so far obtained 8,777,822 votes compared to Sánchez’s 8,771,594 votes, according to official data published by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE). Although the final result is up in the air, the tendency is for Sánchez to close the gap with Fujimori.

The participation figure is known, which stands at 68% with more than 18.7 million voters, according to the ONPE. 6.3 million absent citizens have also been counted.

More than 27 million Peruvians, including 1.2 million citizens residing abroad, had an appointment with the polls this Sunday, in what has been one of the closest electoral disputes in recent times.

Fujimori has won in his fourth attempt to achieve the Presidency in the main population centers, such as Lima, the capital, or Cuzco, while Sánchez has achieved the favor of the electorate in those areas that have traditionally protested the excess of centralism in the country.

Sánchez has majorities in the center, south and east of the country, which are home to the rural, jungle and mountain areas. For his part, Fujimori has had his best records on the coast.
