Technology and innovation as the engine of Eni’s transition model and main tools to carry out the group sustainability strategy. The developments and articulations of this approach are contained in the voluntary sustainability report “Eni for 2025 – A Just transition”, now in its twentieth edition, which illustrates the results achieved during the year and the actions undertaken towards a just energy transition for people and territories. The document was presented during an event at Gazometro attended by Eni stakeholders and managers.
Lapo Pistelli Director Public Affairs of Eni: “Sustainability is the exercise of a responsibility”
“Sustainability is the exercise of a collective responsibility – said Lapo Pistelli, Director of Public Affairs at Eni, opening the event – which accompanies all businesses. It is a way to relate to the stakeholders with whom we share this collective responsibility, to have a winning perspective and create win-win relationships”. For Luigi Sampaolo, Head of Sustainability Positioning and Stakeholder Engagement at Eni, the presentation of the report “represents an important moment of discussion” in light of the need for “internal but above all external collaboration” to achieve the transition objectives.
Objectives achieved
For Eni, 2025 was the year in which the coherence of the strategy and its execution allowed it to achieve the objectives set despite the volatile context and the difficulty of the international scenario. Francesco Gattei, Chief Transition & Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and General Director of Eni, focused precisely on this: “In an extremely volatile context we have not changed strategy. This is an enormous result that we have achieved by maintaining consistency in delivery and strategic results”.
“Sustainability is the management of complexity in a spatial and temporal balance”, added the manager, recalling the importance of financial balance also in this sector. Gattei mentioned the numbers that reflect the strategy: the achievement by Plenitude at 6 GW of installed renewable capacity, up by +41% on the previous year. The growth of Enilive’s biorefining capacity with the creation of three new biorefineries and two further projects in Italy and abroad, with the aim of reaching 5 million tonnes of processing capacity by 2030, compared to the current 1.65 million, for the production of HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) biofuels.
Last year, the Eni CCUS Holding company was also established in a joint venture with the private equity fund GIP, a satellite focused on Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) which will enhance the capture and storage projects of the Eni portfolio. “These results confirm the effectiveness of Eni’s satellite model as a strategic factor for attracting dedicated capital, enhancing individual businesses and accelerating their growth by achieving the set transition objectives”, highlighted Gattei.
“Sustainability is one of the three pillars underlying the way in which Eni does business both in Italy and abroad and is the opposite of predatory action”, stated Luca Vignati, Director Upstream, recalling then how the Upstream net greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 31% compared to 2024 and by 68% compared to the 2018 baseline, in line with the objective of zeroing Scope 1+2 net emissions of the Upstream by 2030 and of Eni by 2035. A result achieved also thanks to the constant control of methane emissions and reaching the target of zero routine flaring for the activities operated.
Giuseppe Ricci, Chief Operating Officer Industrial Transformation underlined the need to focus on “environmental sustainability, also accompanied by social and economic sustainability”. “A sustainable project must guarantee a positive impact on the area where the company operates”. Lorenzo Fiorillo, Director Technology, R&D & Digital at Eni highlighted the upcoming challenges awaiting energy operators with expected strong growth in consumption: from supercomputing to CCS to nuclear fusion. And the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin focused precisely on the energy deriving from the atom: “Sustainability is a path that cannot be resolved with a decree. Either we equip ourselves to produce more terawatt hours in the next 10-15 years or we are heading towards decline. Nuclear power is part of this strategy, regardless of personal ideological positions”.
“To have security, a modern country must first of all have autonomy, and to have autonomy it must have many forms of energy production which must be mainly renewable, therefore geothermal, photovoltaic, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear and gas which is the accompanying form of energy production”, highlighted the minister. ‘Just transition in Italy: challenges and opportunities’ were discussed by Giuseppe Ricci, the president of Legambiente Stefano Ciafani, Chiara Cherubini, manager of the division of policies for industrial reconversion, territorial redevelopment, steel and chemical industry at Mimit and Eliana Viviano, economist at the Bank of Italy. The event continued with more technical panels.
The first on ‘Environmental and social sustainability, solutions for water’, which was attended by Maria Cristina Rulli, Professor of Hydrology and Food Safety at the Polytechnic of Milan and Laura D’Aprile, Head of the Department for Sustainable Development at Mase. The second in-depth analysis focused on ‘Partnerships for local development’ with the interventions of Carlo Batori, Deputy Director General and Central Director for Development Cooperation Dgcs – Maeci, Grazia Sgarra – Director of the Office of Cooperation Subjects, Partnerships and Finance for Development of Aics, Don Dante Carraro – Director of Doctors with Africa – CUAMM and Emanuela Colombo, professor at the Energy Department of the Polytechnic of Milan.
