The Ministry of Transport makes changes to the system of penalty points for traffic violations

The Ministry of Transport has published a draft amendment to the traffic rules, introducing changes to the system of penalty points for traffic violations in addition to the monetary fine.

The amendment provides for an increase in sanctions for using a mobile phone while driving from 8 to 10 points, from 4-8 points for failure to provide an advantage, from 6 to 10 points for driving on the side of the road, from 8 to 10 points for driving through a red traffic light.

At the same time, penalty points will be canceled for driving a car without a technical inspection (if the delay is less than 4 months), for excessive emissions of exhaust gases, for towing a trailer with an expired license (for no more than a year), for entering a congested intersection from which exit is impossible, for driving a vehicle with an expired driver’s license (up to 6 months).

Penalty points received for violations with a “price” of less than 8 points, according to the new rules, will be canceled one year after receipt, provided that the total number of points scored is less than 22.

The changes will come into force after approval by the Knesset Economic Committee.
