Funeral procession under the banner of revenge: Tehran bids farewell to Ali Khamenei

Still from a report by the Iranian state television channel IRIB

Huge crowds of people take part in the funeral procession in Tehran for the Supreme Leader of Iran, Atoyallah Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 as a result of an Israeli-American strike. The airspace over the capital is closed.

According to the organizers, the procession will last 12 hours. Its participants wave red flags – for Shiites this is the color of revenge, and chant calls for the assassination of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. These calls can be seen on banners, and in English.

Among the participants in the event are representatives of Iran’s top political leadership, the army command and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including the commander of the Quds Force, Esmail Qaani.

Here are three of the Rahbar’s sons – Mostafa, Masoud and Meissam Khamenei. The day before, they appeared in public for the first time since their father’s death. Mojtaba’s fourth son, who became his father’s successor, did not appear at this ceremony again. He has not been seen since February 28, which raises many questions.

Throughout the mourning events, representatives of the ayatollah regime and government-controlled media say that it is the sacred duty of Iranians to take revenge on the killers of Ali Khamenei. The head of the legal system, Gholamhossein Mohsani Ejei, called for the death penalty for those responsible.

According to the farewell plan, mourning events will continue in the holy Shiite city of Qom. The coffin will then be transported to Iraq and will be displayed in Najaf and Karbala. The funeral will take place on July 9 in Khamenei’s hometown of Mashhad.
