Instagram has announced a change in the way it labels i profiles generated with artificial intelligence. The platform will limit the visibility of accounts featuring AI-created people without declaring it. The “AI creator” label is renamed to “AI-generated profile“, a choice that according to Instagram makes communication clearer. The new tag serves to signal to users that the person shown in the profile was generated, or created to a substantial extent, through artificial intelligence.
Anyone who does not correctly label an AI profile, writes Tech Crunch, will be able to see reduced its range. However, those who use the new label will not suffer penalties simply for having a person generated by AI as their subject. The rule does not apply to every use of technology: those who simply edit photos, refine captions, create graphics or make other creative touches do not have to apply the label.
Why the change on AI
The novelty arises in part from reports from users who have come across apparently human profilesscoprendo solo in seguito che la persona ritratta era interamente generata dall’IA. “As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated”, ha scritto Instagram. “They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person”.
The growth of artificial influencers on Instagram
The moment chosen is not random. Frustration with AI-generated content grows as it artificial influencer they multiply on social media. An investigation by Wired brought to light, earlier this year, the case of the gay dating app Goose, promoted by a network of alleged AI-generated male influencers: more than two dozen accounts that appeared to belong to real people, some of whom allegedly contacted potential users via direct message to encourage them to sign up.
The case of health and well-being
Even the sector health and well-being is of concern. The New York Times reported in July that it had identified hundreds of AI-generated fake doctors, healers and wellness figures promoting supplements or making health claims among users. The announcement comes after criticism Instagram has received for Musean AI tool that allowed images to be generated using the likenesses of other people, without their explicit consent. Meta later removed the feature.
Last week the company achieved a $18 billion deal with the American states, in a case relating to the effects of Facebook and Instagram on children and adolescents. As part of the agreement, Meta will introduce a default two-hour daily limit for teens on Facebook and Instagram, a “Night Mode” to block late-night access, turning off notifications during school hours and other restrictions.
