The world’s highest hydroelectric dam was commissioned

The world’s highest dam is now in use. On June 26, 2026, the first generator of the 315-meter-high Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Plant in Sichuan Province, China was connected to the power grid.

After the completion of the four generators, the total power of the power plant will be 2,000 megawatts. The power plant is designed to produce an average of 7.7 billion kWh of electricity per year.

A Chinese news agency reported on the matter Xinhua and Global Times.

The key player in the project was Chinese Power Chinan subsidiary Power China Chengdu.

The volume of the embankment of the dam is more than 46 million cubic meters

The height of the dam is 315 meters and that is a rockfill damwhose embankment is built of compacted aggregate.

Other hydroelectric dams

The world’s largest hydroelectric plant, 22,500 MW the Yangtze River is at its peak–in a river in China. The first ideas for the power plant were presented as early as 1919. The power plant was connected to the electricity grid for the first time in 2008.

China’s new record hydropower plant will be challenged by a dam being built in Tajikistan. The Rogun dam, located more than a hundred kilometers east of the country’s capital, Dushanbe, will be 335 meters high when completed, i.e. 20 meters higher than China’s new dam. The dam is estimated to be completed at the end of this decade or the beginning of the 2030s.

So far the highest in the world the dam was the Jinping-1 Dam in Sichuan, China. It is 305 meters high.

Finland’s largest hydroelectric power station is in Imatra. Fortum’s Imatra hydropower plant located in the Vuoksi watershed has a nominal power of 192 MW and a drop height of 24 meters.
