“One of the most modern and sophisticated comic authors”: Posy Simmonds receives the Max and Moritz special prize

The seven other award winners will be announced at the gala on June 5th.

Simmonds was honored as “the grande dame of the British comics scene and one of the most modern and sophisticated contemporary comics authors,” it said. The Brit, born in 1945, only published her first graphic novel in 1999. Before that, she worked as a children’s book author as well as a cartoonist and comic artist for British newspapers.

Graphic novels about headstrong women

Simmonds experienced his international breakthrough with three literary-based graphic novels, the focus of which are idiosyncratic women: “Gemma Bovery” (1999, German publication 2011), “Tamara Drewe” (2007, German publication 2010) and “Cassandra Darke” (2018, German publication 2019).

With British, subtle and nasty humor, Simmonds mocked the inadequacies of the middle class, art chic and social media celebrities, it was said.

25 nominations for the Max and Moritz Prize

25 titles are nominated for the Max and Moritz Prize in several categories, including “Best German-language comic”, “Best international comic”, “Best non-fiction comic”, “Best comic for children”, “Best German-language comic debut” (worth 1,000 euros) and the best German-language comic artist (worth 10,000 euros). It is awarded by an independent jury of experts. Since 1984 he has contributed to the recognition of comics in Germany. (epd)
