Ovarian rupture after aerobic exercise

TP HCMPhuong Anh, 26 years old, an aerobics instructor, had severe abdominal pain after teaching students. She thought she had appendicitis, but the doctor discovered a ruptured ovarian cyst and bleeding.

On April 17, Doctor II Le Thanh Hung, Deputy Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the patient’s abdominal CT results ruled out appendicitis and noted bleeding from the left ovary. The doctor diagnosed that the patient’s corpus luteum cyst had ruptured, causing intra-abdominal bleeding.

Women have two ovaries with the function of creating eggs and secreting sex hormones. Every month, during the menstrual cycle, after ovulation, the ovaries form corpus luteum cysts. The cyst lasts for about two weeks, lasting from after ovulation until before the first day of the next menstrual cycle.

Under the effect of pituitary hormones, mature follicles will fall, and the ovum will move into the fallopian tube, waiting for sperm to fertilize it. If the ovulation point touches a small blood vessel, it can stop bleeding and heal on its own. In addition to the cause of spontaneous rupture, external forces such as vigorous exercise, excessive labor, or improper sexual intercourse can also lead to rupture of the cyst or the rupture of the cyst will stop the bleeding on its own but there is still a risk of bleeding. blood again.

Aerobics is a high-intensity exercise, performing jerky and shaking movements every day. Doctor Thanh Hung believes that the cause of the cyst rupture is because Phuong Anh exercises too vigorously, the blood cannot stop on its own, causing hemorrhage. If she continues to teach, the abdomen will be severely compressed, hit hard, the cyst will rupture more seriously, there may be massive bleeding, more severe is hemorrhagic shock, making it difficult to save life.

The condition is more dangerous if the patient has a blood clotting disorder or is being treated with anticoagulants.

The patient was hospitalized and given hemostatic drugs. Dr. Hung advised that if he did not respond to treatment, surgery might be required. After 6-12 hours of using the medicine, the patient responded well, the pain decreased and went away after 48 hours of admission. Blood tests and ultrasound showed that the bleeding had stopped on its own.

Exercise helps the body stay healthy. However, because of women’s characteristics and physiological cycles, doctors warn that exercising incorrectly or excessively will pose some potential risks such as ovarian rupture, uterine prolapse, and genital injuries. .

To prevent this, women should limit vigorous exercise, especially movements that directly impact the abdominal area, do not carry heavy loads in the middle of the menstrual cycle, and avoid vigorous sex. People with unusual symptoms of lower abdominal pain need to proactively see a doctor for timely treatment.
