Bundesliga: Bayern basketball players win top game against Berlin

First place after the main round in the Basketball Bundesliga can no longer be taken away from the FC Bayern Munich basketball players. With an 85:79 (42:37) home win in the top game against Alba Berlin, the defending champion extended its lead over the second-placed team. As first in the main round, Bayern will have home advantage on their side in every series of the playoffs.

Bayern forced several ball losses in the first half and kept getting going. In the middle of the second half, basketball world champion Andreas Obst took the game’s first double-digit lead with two three-pointers in a row. But the Berliners came back thanks to Malte Delow and reduced their deficit to 37:42 at the break.

Obst and Rathan-Mayes lead Bayern to victory

In the second half it took over four minutes before Munich scored for the first time; the home team got off to a false start with 2:11. But Bayern equalized at the half-time break. In the middle of the final period, Xavier Rathan-Mayes took over for the Munich team, who first went on a 9-0 run and shortly afterwards scored points in five attacks in a row and were once again ahead by double digits. In the final phase, the hosts allowed the Berliners to get close again due to a few ball losses, but Justinian Jessup made the decision with his three-pointer 31 seconds before the end.

Andi Obst led the Munich team with 18 points, Rathan-Mayes followed with twelve points and five assists. Bayern face Vechta, Ludwigsburg and Oldenburg in the main round before the playoffs begin on May 17th.
