Champions League, who qualifies between Milan, Roma, Como and Juve? All combinations and separate rankings

Ninety minutes from the end of Serie A, the race to Champions League is yet to be decided: Milan, Roma, Como and Juve are competing for the last two places available for the next edition of the top European club competition, after Napoli mathematically achieved qualification a few days ago. Everything will be decided on the last day, Sunday 24 May at 8.45pm, with the matches taking place at the same time. With four clubs still in the running (and 81 combinations) anything can still happen. Here are the scenarios, even in the event of a separate classification with two, three or even four teams finishing on equal points.

Champions League, Milan qualifies if…

Milan are now third in the standings with 70 points and a goal difference of +19. On the last day they will face Cagliari. As regards the head-to-head matches, in the event of finishing on equal points with Juventus, Milan would be the underdog: the head-to-head matches are balanced, but the Bianconeri would have a better overall goal difference. If instead they finished on equal points with Roma or Como, Milan would be ahead in the standings. In the three-team finishes, if Milan, Juve and Roma finished on equal points, the order would be: Juventus, Milan and Roma. In a draw with Juve and Como, however, the Lombards would be ahead of Milan, with Juve behind. If the teams involved were Milan, Roma and Como, the Rossoneri would be first ahead of Roma and Como. There is also the possibility of a finish with four teams on equal points, at 71: in that case the ranking would be Milan, Como, Juventus and Roma.

Champions League, Roma qualifies if…

Roma, on the other hand, is fourth with 70 points and a goal difference of +26. On the last day, Gasperini’s team will be busy on the Verona pitch. In head-to-head matches, the Giallorossi would be the underdogs in almost all cases of finishing on equal points. If they finished equal with Juventus or Milan, Roma would finish behind both. Roma would also be penalized against Como: the head-to-head matches are balanced, but the overall goal difference rewards the Lombards. In the event of a three-team ranking with Juve and Milan, the order would be Juventus, Milan and Rome. If instead the teams involved were Juve, Roma and Como, Como would be ahead of Roma, with Juve behind. In a finish equal on points with Milan and Como, the Giallorossi would be second behind Milan.

Also in the eventual arrival of four teams on equal points, Roma would be last behind Milan, Como and Juventus.

Champions League, Como qualifies if…

Como is currently fifth in the table with 68 points and a goal difference of +33. On the last day, Fabregas’ team will face Cremonese, with the hope of still winning a place in the Champions League, which obviously depends on the other results.

As far as head-to-head matches are concerned, Como would be ahead of Juventus if they finished on equal points, while they would be behind Milan in the same situation. With Roma, however, the direct comparisons are balanced, but the better overall goal difference would allow Como to finish ahead.

In the three-team scenarios, if Como, Juve and Milan finished on equal pointsthe Lombards would be first ahead of Milan and Juventus. The same would happen in an arrival with Juve and Roma, with Como ahead of both. However, the case of a draw with Milan and Roma is different: in that situation Milan would be in front, followed by Roma and then Como.

Even in the possible four-team ranking, Como would occupy second place behind Milan and ahead of Juventus and Roma.

Champions League, Juve qualifies if…

Juventus is currently sixth in the table with 68 points and a goal difference of +27. On the last day they will play the derby against Torino, a delicate and decisive match to continue chasing qualification for the next Champions League. Juve will have to take full advantage and hope, obviously, for favorable results on other fields.

In direct clashes, the Bianconeri would be ahead of both Milan and Roma if they finished on equal points. With Milan the direct comparisons are balanced, but Juventus would have a better overall goal difference. Against Como, however, the Turin team would be the underdog.

In the three-team scenarios, if Juve, Milan and Roma finished on equal points, the Bianconeri would be ahead of everyone. In an arrival with Milan and Como, however, Como would be first ahead of Milan and Juventus. Even in the case of a draw with Roma and Como, Juve would end up behind both.

If, however, all four teams – Milan, Como, Juventus and Roma – finished on equal points, the separated ranking would see Milan ahead of everyone, followed by Como, Juventus and Roma.

The separate ranking

With 90 minutes left in the championship, the scenario of seeing all the teams on equal terms at 71 still survives (with draws by Milan and Roma and victories by Como and Juve). A scenario that would qualify Milan and Como, with Juve fifth and Roma sixth. Here’s what the ranking would look like in that case:

Milan 10 points (+3 goal diff.)

Como 10 points (+2 goal diff.)

Juve 6 points

Rome 5 points
