Real Madrid renews its license with the Euroleague for 10 years

Real Madrid will continue in the Euroleague for the next 10 years, after agreeing to extend its license in the competition for the next decade, thereby shelving the NBA project in Europe scheduled for 2027.

In a statement, the competition reported a series of strategic decisions taken by its Board of Directors, approved at a meeting held this Friday in Barcelona, ​​and which will be submitted for ratification by the General Assembly on July 7.

Thus, the Euroleague Board approved the composition of 20 teams for the 2026-27 season, with Paris Basketball and Besiktas, which will occupy the place of AS Monaco, with a special invitation for one campaign. And in that relationship of clubs is Real Madrid, which agreed with the Euroleague to extend its 10-year license, after its end this Monday. The continuity of the white club confirms that it is moving away from the project that the NBA has prepared in Europe for 2027.

Thus, the participating clubs will be Real Madrid, Anadolu Efes, Estrella Roja, Dubai Basketball, Armani Milan, Barça, Bayern, Fenerbahce, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Kosner Baskonia, ASVEL Villeurbanne, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Paris Basketball, Partizan, Valencia Basket, Virtus Bologna and Zalgiris Kaunas.

In addition, the EuroLeague reaffirmed its commitment to expand the competition to 24 teams for the 2027-28 season and agreed to “continue evaluating competition formats that allow for this expansion, while preserving the principle of each team facing all the others and guaranteeing greater integration within the general European basketball calendar,” the statement said.

Finally, the executive director of Euroleague Basketball, Chus Bueno, reported on the ongoing process, which is scheduled to start on July 1 and end during the next season, to transform the current long-term licenses of the clubs into franchises.

The competition highlighted the “great interest shown by multiple parties” in this transformation from licenses to franchises, “including current Euroleague clubs, as well as basketball organizations and investors representing new markets.”
