Tour de France Femmes: Lorena Wiebes completes the double whammy

Wiebes, who had won the first stage in Lausanne the day before and thus captured the yellow jersey, completed the tailor-made work of her teammates. It was only 600 meters before the finish of the stage that started at the headquarters of the World Cycling Association that the field with the SD Worx helpers at the front caught up with the breakaway Riejanne Markus, also from the Netherlands.

The former Vuelta runner-up Markus from the German team Lidl-Trek had broken away from a breakaway group with 39 km to go and was still 30 seconds ahead at the five-kilometer mark. In the sprint, Wiebes, who leads the overall standings by 14 seconds over Kim Le Court-Pienaar (Mauritius), was again by far the strongest.

Antonia Niedermaier (Rosenheim), who narrowly missed out on the white jersey of the best young driver on Saturday, crossed the finish line at the same time as Wiebes and is in 17th place in the overall ranking. “Everything went well today, but now we are slowly looking forward to the mountains,” said Niedermaier on ARD.
