In a difficult farewell to Miami, Carreo caves in to a Sinner with seven lives

Pablo Carreo, a Spanish tennis player, had a difficult goodbye on Sunday at the Miami tournament, the second Masters 1,000 of the season, when he lost (5-7, 7-5, 7-5) to Italian Jack Sinner in a match in which he had five balls to advance into eighths.

The Asturian grabbed control and was ahead of his young -but higher-ranked— opponent, and had the opportunity to sign a serious win five times, one in the second set and four in the same game of the third. After more than three hours, Sinner reached the abyss and will face Australian Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16.

With an early ‘break’ and a 3-0 lead in the first set, Carreo gained control of the scoreboard. The Italian responded and even had the service to win, but the Spaniard presented his bet with three consecutive games and a score of 5-7. Sinner, a Miami finalist last year, appeared insane at times but awoke when he was in grave danger.

The Italian’s serve saved him on several occasions, including the first match point in the tenth game. The Spaniard was unable to control the stick and went on to lose the next 11 points, forcing a third set. Carreo came back whole after the interval, eager to take the initiative once more, and he got the ‘break’ and 3-5.

The Spaniard served to win, but Sinner stopped making errors once more and rose to number 11 in the world, having gone 4-5 without missing a game. Carreo had the rest once again, this time four match points, at least two clear ones to seal the deal, but the Italian showed to be a man of many lives, cold blood, and quality.

Sinner demonstrated that he is now one of the finest in the world and takes use of his opportunities in the second battle between the two, just as he did in 2020 in Rotterdam when the Spaniard triumphed. Carreo suffered a shocking setback when he arrived at Indian Wells without a win, and the young transalpine will face Kyrgios again, despite the fact that he was unable to play due to illness at the time.
