Amazon researches and deploys satellite Internet in Vietnam

The information was given at a meeting between Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan and Mr. David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President, Director of Global Legal and External Affairs of Amazon, on the afternoon of May 22.

This move comes after Amazon expressed its interest in the Vietnamese satellite Internet market many times. During a meeting with the leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2025, the group’s representative offered to find opportunities to provide satellite Internet services in Vietnam through a pilot license.

Amazon’s satellite Internet project was initially named Kuiper, then changed its name to Amazon Leo at the end of 2025. The system is built according to the low-orbit satellite constellation model, with plans to deploy more than 3,200 satellites to provide high-speed Internet connections for remote areas and islands.

According to Amazon’s introduction, this service can reach speeds of 400 Mbps for individual users and 1 Gbps for businesses, with low latency. By April this year, Amazon Leo had put more than 300 satellites into orbit through 11 launches, but had not yet been mass commercialized. This is currently the third largest Internet satellite system in the world, after Starlink and OneWeb. In Vietnam, Amazon has established a business called Amazon Kuiper in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, Minister Vu Hai Quan highly appreciated Amazon’s contributions in supporting e-commerce exports, cloud computing, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as promoting innovation and digital transformation in Vietnam.

The head of the Ministry of Science and Technology proposed that Amazon expand investment in digital infrastructure, data and high technology in Vietnam; Strengthen cooperation with domestic technology enterprises; promote technology transfer and develop high-quality human resources. Minister Vu Hai Quan also asked this group to accompany Vietnam in building a green, sustainable technology ecosystem.

He affirmed that the Ministry of Science and Technology is ready to coordinate with relevant units to support and create favorable conditions for Amazon in the process of research, investment, business, production as well as equipment testing in accordance with legal regulations.
