The panorama of three-dimensional platformers is preparing to welcome back one of its historical protagonists. Activision and the Toys for Bob development studio have in fact made official the details relating to Spyro the Dragon 4, officially titled Spyro: A Realm Beyond. The project marks the return of the famous purple dragon in a completely original adventure almost two decades after the last unpublished chapter, breaking a long fast interrupted only by the nostalgia operation of the remastered trilogy of 2018. The market launch is scheduled for spring 2027 and will cover an extended range of platforms, which includes PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC and the successor to Nintendo Switch.
From a gameplay point of view, the element of greatest discontinuity compared to the past is represented by the evolution of the movement mechanics. The developers have in fact abandoned the historical limitation of gliding and limited flight levels, introducing for the first time a complete free flight system within the game maps. This new aerial dynamic will allow players to explore vertically developed scenarios, chaining aerobatics, dives and tight turns to overcome environmental obstacles and combat threats.
The plot will see the protagonist stranded in an unknown dimension and forced to postpone plans to return home due to the sudden invasion of the so-called Scavs, an enemy faction that threatens the survival of the kingdom. To guarantee continuity of identity to the work, the production confirmed the return of the historic dubber Tom Kenny for the voice of the protagonist in the original version. Further details on the gameplay dynamics and structural innovations will be released over the next few months.
