A European survey conducted on a sample of 3,000 women in Italy, France and Germany analyzes in detail the dynamics, fears and real needs of travelers who choose to travel independently. The data shows that in Italy 53% of women have already made at least one overnight stay aloneoutlining a mature market but held back by specific factors, while 17% declare that they would never consider this option. For 55% of Italian interviewees, solo travel represents first and foremost synonymous with freedom and independence, followed by relaxation (40%) and the search for new experiences (32%)often taking the form of a path of personal growth useful for getting out of one’s comfort zone.
Although cultural and personal motivations are strong, Security concerns remain the main obstacle for 43% of women in Italyto which are added the fear of managing emergencies or illnesses without support (30%), the preference for traveling in company (25%), the risk of loneliness (20%) and the impact of higher costs (20%).
From a geographical and logistical point of viewpreferences are clearly oriented towards i short stays in Europe of up to four nights, preferring escapes to cities of art (36%) over seaside destinations (30%)with a mandatory request for comfort and privacy which pushes 81% of the sample to exclude shared accommodation in favor of private rooms.
On a comparative level, Italy records an intermediate perceived safety index, with 59% of women declaring themselves safe during travel, compared to 63% recorded in Germany and 50% in Francewhich confirms itself as the country with the greatest reluctance, where 31% categorically exclude the experience. The situations that generate greater discomfort in public spaces are homogeneous in the three countries and concern frequenting places open at night (62% in Italy), exploring unknown neighborhoods (42%) and stopping alone in bars or nightclubs (34%).
The most feared threats coincide with risk of being attacked or robbed, with peaks of 31% in France and 23% in Italy, followed by harassment and unwanted attention. To mitigate these problems and increase trust, the solutions sought vary depending on nationality: if in Italy and Germany the smartphone is considered the main protection tool (43%), French travelers give priority to human presence, identifying continuous monitoring staff as an essential guarantee.
When choosing accommodation facilities, the determining factors for Italian users are the centrality of the location and the availability of a local contact (37%), while in Germany what is required above all is transparency of information on the surrounding neighborhood (44%). As highlighted by the analysis of internal services in the European hospitality sector, commercial expectations must translate into concrete structural responses and clear logistical positions. Malin Widmarc-Nilsson, Vice President Commerce at Meininger Hotel, commented: “The study clearly demonstrates that women traveling alone have very specific expectations. That’s where we come in: with centrally located, well-connected and affordable accommodation in European cities, and an environment where guests can feel welcomed and supported at all times”.
The evolution of demand requires the integration of precise standards that go beyond the basic offer, including controlled access and 24-hour active assistance to fill the protection deficit that still conditions movement choices. The dynamics that emerged confirm that tariff flexibility, indicated as an incentive by 33% of the sample, must be associated with precise environmental guarantees, as Widmarc-Nilsson concludes“traveling alone is synonymous with independence, but to feel truly at ease you need the right conditions. That’s why we offer targeted solutions that ensure safety, comfort and orientation, such as female-only dormitories, key card access, secure storage and a 24/7 reception as a reliable point of reference. The study clearly demonstrates that women traveling alone have very specific expectations, from price to privacy. This is exactly where we come in: centrally located, well-connected and affordable accommodation in European cities, in an environment where safety is not left to chance. For us, safety, comfort and flexibility are not just extras: they are fundamental elements”.
