French a large follow-up study has linked eight commonly used supplements to worse heart health.
The so-called non-antioxidant additives, such as nitrites and sulfites, were especially linked to the disadvantages.
These can be found especially in the crown jewels of the midsummer table, i.e. sausage and alcoholic beverages.
If Midsummer’s eating habits remain, the result can at least be higher blood pressure.
According to the study, those who ate a lot of non-antioxidant supplements were 29 percent more likely to have high blood pressure.
In addition, they had an additional 16 percent higher likelihood of cardiovascular problems, such as a heart attack.
Part of the risk of heart problems was explained precisely by blood pressure, because high blood pressure itself increases the likelihood of heart problems.
Research appeared in the European Heart Journal, and previously it was reported by the world of technology.
In research more than 110,000 French adults were followed, the majority of whom were women. The follow-up time of an individual person was 7.9 years on average.
Participants report everything they eat and drink for three days every six months.
Then the researchers found out in detail what the consumed foods contained.
Almost none of the respondents avoided supplements, as 99.5 percent of them received them from their diet.
During the long follow-up period, some of the subjects became ill with high blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases.
Based on the results, the researchers found eight additives associated with high blood pressure, which were:
-
potassium sorbate (E202)
-
potassium metabisulfite (E224)
-
sodium nitrite (E250)
-
ascorbic acid (E300)
-
sodium ascorbate (E301)
-
sodium erythorbate (E316)
-
citric acid (E330)
-
Rosemary extracts (E392)
On the list there are also so-called antioxidant preservatives, such as citric acid and ascorbic acid, i.e. vitamin C.
Their abundant use also increased the probability of high blood pressure by 22 percent.
Substances occur naturally, for example, in fruits, through which they have been studied to be good for health.
However, according to the researchers, it is possible that substances affect the human body in a different way when they have been industrially added to food.
There may also be so far unknown interactions with other foodstuffs.
Researchers consider the results to be significant, because stores are promoting products containing additives, and it is practically impossible to avoid the substances.
The results suggest that highly processed and long-lasting products should not be eaten extravagantly.
Instead, daily eating should consist mainly of vegetables and fruits, legumes and fish.
According to the researchers, it may be that from the point of view of heart health, it would still be worthwhile to choose products that have been processed as little as possible.
In practice, therefore, it would be worthwhile to replace canned vegetables with fresh ones and canned fish with freshly caught ones.
With additives however, have a good purpose, as they prevent food from spoiling, i.e. they prevent the growth of dangerous bacteria and molds.
According to the researchers, the benefits and harms of additives should be carefully weighed in future studies.
