The Catholics close ranks, ‘bell’ for Schlein and Conte

A bell rang at Schlein and Conte to say that i Catholics are there. Whether in the Democratic Party or outside, with its own subject, we will see. Paolo Ciani, independent deputy elected from the ranks of the dem, thus explains the objective of the event on Saturday 16 May at the Antonianum Auditorium in Rome: “More than the issue inside or outside the Democratic Party, the novelty is that different subjects decide to promote a joint initiative; already with Demos and others we had promoted Rete Civica Solidale and now the same subjects and with Democratic Communitywhich is the association created by Graziano Delrio, we promote an event to discuss topics that we consider important”. Subjects outside the party led by Elly Schlein, “not a current”.

The signal, however, is also to the Nazarene

“The issue is not just doing the Margherita 2.0 or ask for greater listening for Catholics within the Democratic Party. Rather, it is a question of broadening and giving representation to a non-confessional space which has its own ramifications in society”, explains Ciani further. “We speak to the entire centre-left and not just to the Democratic Party”. As for the comparison with the reformist areas, Ciani specifies: “We are different realities from them, we are not the Catholic current in the Democratic Party. Will we become one? Will we organize ourselves outside the party? We will see, but this is not the topic of Rome’s initiative. The theme is that there is an area of thought, of culture rooted in Italy, which often has difficulty feeling represented in politics, which comes together and puts forward proposals”.

Despite this, looking at it from within the parliamentary ranks of the Democratic Party, the initiative takes on different meanings

What is particularly striking is the coincidence with the other event organized in Turin by Stefano Bonaccini and which brings together several reformist exponents. There will be a noble father like Walter Veltroni. A “Back to the Future” for the first secretary of the Democratic Party who returns to the Mole, where he held the historic Lingotto speech in 2007. He does so, this time, as a ‘guest’ of the security initiative organized by Bonaccini and an important part of the party’s reformist galaxy. But not only that: Veltroni and Bonaccini will be there togetherFranco Gabrielliformer Chief of Police indicated by many as a potential candidate in the coalition primaries (he, for the moment, is withdrawing), provided that the consultation takes place.

There are many names of exponents of the reformist wing of the Dem

And Antonio Decaro to Michele De Pascale; and Piero De Luca to Eugenio Giani. And then, to introduce the works, the mayor of Turin Stefano Lo Russo and the Democratic Party senator Alessandro Alfieri. As mentioned, exponents of the Democratic Community will be seen in Rome. With him will be Marianna Madia, a deputy who last week said goodbye to the Democratic Party to join, as an independent, the Italia Viva group in the Chamber.

But above all there will be Romano Prodi

According to dem parliamentary sources, the Professor is making an important contribution to the organization of the Catholic and moderate leg of the centre-left. Among the other interventions at the Rome event, we highlight those of Gaetano Manfredia name that has been included in the range of possible centre-left federations; the MEP Marco Tarquinio, the deputy Paolo Ciani, promoter of the initiative to close the works. Testimony is then expected Gino Cecchettinfather of Giulia, a victim of feminicide who has become a symbol of the fight against gender violence. A way of measuring the strength of Catholics and reformists, observes a Dem source, and of claiming ownership of the Catholic vote in the centre-left.

The news, it is added, is that this world now seems to want to play its game inside the Democratic Party, not outside. Anything but a detail, given that until six months ago such an initiative would have been considered the start of a political construction site. It is the referendum effect, explains a PD parliamentarian, which suggests the concrete possibility of winning the elections.
