Iran praises Brazil’s position on war at Brics meeting

In one of these meetings, held on the sidelines of the summit this Thursday (14), Vieira discussed topics of bilateral interest with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, including the war with the USA.

According to information from Itamaraty, Brazil conveyed a favorable position for a diplomatic solution between the countries and the willingness to contribute to negotiations that lead to peace and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential route for the global transit of fuels and fertilizers.

The Brazilian ministry highlighted that the representative of the Iranian regime recalled the “constructive effort” of Brazil and Türkiye in mediating a dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program in 2010.

At the beginning of the conflict, in February, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvla (PT) came to Iran’s defense, referring to the war as “Trump’s and Netanyahu’s”. The PT member also said that there was no evidence of the production of nuclear weapons in the Persian country, as stated by the White House.

Vieira also met with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, on which occasion he arranged a visit to Moscow, with an emphasis on economic-commercial relations and the supply of Russian fertilizers for the Brazilian market.

Itamaraty reported that the two discussed the wars in Ukraine and Iran, the G20 agenda and the succession of António Guterres as head of the UN General Secretariat. Brazil highlighted that it is in favor of former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet’s candidacy for the position.

The bilateral meeting takes place one day after former president Dilma Rousseff met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. She is currently president of the BRICS New Development Bank (NBD).
