During Putin’s visit to China, it was not possible to reach an agreement on the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov admitted that during negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, politicians failed to reach an agreement on the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline.

“The President said today at the negotiations that, in general, there are basic parameters of understanding on the Power of Siberia-2. There are both on the route and on how it will be built. Some nuances remain to be agreed upon, but in general such an understanding already exists,” Interfax quotes the official. Peskov added that there is no clear understanding of the implementation time frame.

The main gas pipeline should connect Siberian gas fields with western China. It is expected that its length will be 6,700 kilometers, and the volume of supplies will be 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Russia began to show particular interest in the project after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which deprived it of European markets. On the eve of Putin’s visit, there were suggestions that China would show greater interest amid the Gulf War, but this did not happen.

Let us add that in 2023, China decided to increase gas imports from Turkmenistan as part of the Line D project, under which 30 billion cubic meters will be imported annually – despite the fact that Turkmen gas costs China 30% more than Russian gas.
