Israel and Iran raid each other’s petrochemical plants

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) today announced that they had conducted raids targeting many targets of the petrochemical complex in the Mahshahr area, southwestern Iran, but have not released details.

Iranian media later confirmed that a petrochemical facility in Khuzestan province was hit by Israel. At least two explosions occurred at the Karun petrochemical company in Mahshahr city, causing partial damage and no casualties. This is the area that was attacked by IDF airstrikes in April.

The Mahshahr port city government announced a 30% reduction in staff working at administrative agencies, amid the escalating conflict again. The regulations do not apply to emergency response forces and electricity, water and gas suppliers.

A few hours later, the IRGC announced a retaliatory strike targeting a petrochemical plant in Haifa city, accusing Israel of starting a “dangerous game” by attacking civilian targets and Iran’s oil industry.

“The consequences will cover all targets in the region. Damage to the global economy will be borne by the main arson suspect. That suspect is the United States,” IRGC warned.

On the afternoon of June 8, the IDF said it had completed a large-scale airstrike, mobilizing dozens of fighters to target Iran’s air defense systems. Israeli officials confirmed that they had destroyed a “series of strategic defense systems” deployed by Iran in the past few months, but did not specify.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the missile battles would increase challenges for the “already chaotic diplomatic process” between Tehran and Washington. He said that the US was directly responsible for Israel’s actions that violated the ceasefire order, arguing that Tel Aviv would not act without consulting Washington.

Iran on June 7 launched a series of missiles aimed at Israeli territory, in retaliation for the IDF raid on the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut, which is considered a stronghold of the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah. Israel announced that it had intercepted all 11 missiles launched by Iran and responded, despite calls for restraint from US President Donald Trump.

Iran has warned that an attack on Beirut would cause full-blown conflict to flare up again across the Middle East. The fighting has diminished hopes of achieving lasting peace in the Middle East, as negotiation efforts stall and the ceasefire agreement that took effect on April 8 is continuously challenged.
