Germany has been sweating for days, and High Gorgias continues to push warm, humid air across the country. Now the heat wave is interrupted by sometimes severe thunderstorms – only to come back with a vengeance. BILD reveals where the action will really take place on Friday.
Heavy rain, hail, squalls
Weather expert Dr. Karsten Brandt to BILD: “The first heavy rain in the north, for example in Hamburg, has already passed. As the day progresses, the thunderstorms move south.” The big heat blast can like a storm from the sky patter. Brandt: “This will be the complete insurance program.”
The map shows: This is how explosive the air is over Germany on Friday afternoon. White-pink means: There is a threat of violent thunderstorms here. The numbers say how quickly it bangs: the deeper into the minus, the bigger the bang
Graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung specifies for BILD: “Starting in the afternoon, roughly from 4 p.m., the first strong cells ignite from the west, roughly in the Aachen-Bremen strip. Pretty much the entire range is possible there until the late evening hours: heavy rain with the risk of flooding, large hailstones, heavy to hurricane-like gusts and a veritable flash of fireworks. At the same time also in the western and southwestern low mountain ranges, in the Black Forest and in the Allgäu. The remnants later move away as heavy rain towards Hanover and Lüneburg Heath.”
Danger of tornadoes
The German Weather Service sees heavy gusts of up to 100 km/h and heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter. There is even a small chance of Tornados. Jung: “The ingredients fit unusually well. High-energy, muggy air meets strong wind shear at altitude – that’s the recipe for organized, long-lasting supercells. And with supercells, a short-lived, local tornado can never be completely ruled out, with a focus on the west/northwest.”
The weather map shows where it will rain (green symbols) and lightning (red symbols) on Friday.
After tropical nights (temperatures not below 20 degrees) and desert days (highest temperature over 35 degrees), the storms are not really a cooling effect. Dr. Brandt: “It stays very hot, especially in the city centers, these are real deodorant test days. But despite all the joy of summer, that can quickly become dangerous.” Anyone who is predisposed should stay at home during the hottest days of the day. drink a lot and avoid exertion. Brandt: “This heat is like a silent storm that can claim many victims.”
This is how the weather turns into the weekend
It will remain hot and locally thundery for the weekend. According to Brandt, the risk of showers is greatest in North Rhine-Westphalia for the Germany game on Saturday. Dominik Jung: “The focus shifts to the center and the south – locally again into the storm area. The lowest tendency for thunderstorms is then in the southwest and later in the northwest.” At the start of the new week it will be a little cooler, at least in the north. A low foothills promises temperatures of 22 to 26 degrees – still very summery Wetter!
