Maduro calls for unity in Venezuela after earthquakes

Former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, who is imprisoned in the United States, called for “maximum unity” in Venezuela after the two earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 7.2 that occurred on Wednesday (24) and which caused deaths, injuries and material damage in the South American country that are still being counted.

“Beloved people of Venezuela: in the face of the powerful earthquake that hit our homeland, (his wife) Cilia (Flores) and I raise our prayers for each affected family, for the injured, for those who suffer and for all our people”, said the chavista, in a statement released on his social networks.

“Today, the watchword is one: maximum unity, maximum solidarity and maximum action. That no one is left alone; that each community takes care of its children, its elderly and its sick”, added Maduro, who asked for support to the security, civil defense and rescue forces involved in the search operations for survivors.

“In this difficult time, we call for national unity, serenity and concrete love: to help, protect, share, rebuild and rebuild. Venezuela has already faced great trials, and we will also emerge from this stronger — with faith, discipline and solidarity. Our hearts and prayers are with you. May God bless and protect Venezuela!”, concluded the message, in which Maduro described himself as Venezuela’s “constitutional president”.

In early January, the United States carried out a military operation in Caracas that resulted in the capture of Maduro and Cilia Flores, so that they could face charges related to narco-terrorism in American federal court. The next hearing in the case, which is being processed in New York, is scheduled for July 22.
